RADED Portfolio: Showcase of a Dynamic Responsive Education Portfolio for Academic Promotion

Purpose or Case Report: Many academic radiology leaders now equally value contributions to education and research in their departments. Whereby research generates publications and grants, the accolades from education may be less completely captured in a curriculum vitae (CV). We present a system that collects, organizes, and showcases a real-time record of the radiologist’s education portfolio to guide faculty development and academic promotion.
Methods & Materials: Each subspecialty section revised our current curriculum to include the most current topics with lectures distributed equitably across their section. We selected Microsoft Power BI® to support interactive graphic display of multiple metrics for the individual and the complete department including lecture curriculum, conference schedule, lectures by level and date, lectures per section/academic track and individual teaching evaluations. Individual protected access to personal and aggregate information is through departmental username and password. The teaching portfolio tool was assessed by the faculty members with both open-ended questions for qualitative feedback and 1-5 rating scale questions to quantify ease of use, visibility, utility, and appeal.
Results: RADED Portfolio provides a comprehensive comparative analysis of over 50 faculty radiologists for 35 metrics, 3,500 data points for a total of 625 lectures, conferences, visiting professorships, grand rounds, and other education-related activities for the last six years for over 5500 faculty evaluations for 1:1 teaching, lectures, and hands-on skills training. Interactive graphics display faculty against track (Academic Clinician, Academic Support, Clinician Educator, Emeritus, and Tenure), rank (Instructor, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor), subspecialty (Cardiac, Chest, ER, Fetal, GI, GU, IR, MSK, Neuro, Nuclear Medicine, and Oncology) and sorts for delivered versus impending lectures. To date 14 faculty members responded to the survey with average ratings 4.2 to 4.8/5 for all metrics. The tool was appealing and easy to use with suggestions for enhancements including data export features and capturing additional teaching activities.
Conclusions: RADED Portfolio is an organized and efficient tool that houses all educational activities in one visually appealing interface. This has dual purpose in simplifying dossier preparation for promotion as well as supporting a community of educators throughout the department.
