Review of Congenital Foot Anomalies with Radiographic Correlation in The Pediatric Population

Purpose or Case Report: Evaluation of foot anomalies is a common task charged to the Pediatric and General Radiologist. Knowledge of normal, as well as abnormal, morphology and angles in relation to foot alignment is important to accurately arrive at the correct diagnosis. Some of the most commonly encountered congenital pediatric foot abnormalities are:Telipas equinovarus (clubfoot), congenital vertical talus, and skewfoot. Additionally, more isolated anomalies can occur, hindfoot valgus, Hindfoot varus, Pes Planus, Pes Cavus, and Metatarsus adductus. The purpose of this exhibit is to describe and radiographically demonstrate how to completely evaluate congenital foot anomalies in comparison to the normal foot for the interpreting radiologist.
Methods & Materials: Retrospective chart review of pediatric patients between the ages of 0-18 years whom received foot radiographs as part of routine clinical care at a dedicated academic pediatric institution between January 2008 and September 2016. Abnormal foot radiographs will be used to review the congenital variance along with normal foot radiographs. The images will be anatomicallyannotated with morphology and angles associated with the specific anomaly, normal foot radiographs will also be demonstrated within the age appropriate comparisons.
Results: Review normal radiographic anatomy, morphology and alignment of congenitally abnormal foot compared to radiographic appearance of the common congenital foot abnormalities including: Talipes equinovarus (Figs. 1 & 2), congenital vertical talus (Fig. 3), and skew foot. Additionally examples of more isolated abnormalities will be given including: Hindfoot valgus, Hindfoot varus, Pes Planus, Pes Cavus, and Metatarsus adductus.
Conclusions: This educational exhibit will highlight the radiographic evaluation of common congenital foot abnormalities with descriptions and comparison to an age appropriate normal foot radiographs.
