Education Over the Net: Global Education in Times of a Pandemic

Purpose or Case Report: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, after more than 12 years of in-person programming, our educational collaboration with radiology trainees from Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH) in Ethiopia was interrupted. Similar to many US based programs, conferences were transitioned to a virtual format. Since January 2021, we have offered weekly hour-long Friday Case review sessions to residents and fellows from Addis Ababa University. After the first 4 months in which only 2 faculty members presented every week, the opportunity for additional volunteers was offered to all faculty members and the program continued. Here, we describe the results of the last 6 months of the teaching sessions.
Methods & Materials: The number of cases presented at these conferences between May and October 2021 are described in terms of audience, organ system, and modality as well as the evaluations provided by the audience.
Results: 16 faculty members participated in 23 different sessions and included 170 cases of which 90 were neuroradiology, 40 MSK and 40 body/chest. There were 77 MRI, 64 xrays, 40 CT’s, 27 Ultrasound and 5 fluoroscopy. Thirteen sessions were aimed for the 3 pediatric radiology fellows in the institution and 5 sessions targeted the 40 residents. In the residents’ sessions, the residents presented 25 interested cases collected during their pediatrics rotation. Feedback from these sessions have shown high ratings of 'good' and 'very good' in overall content in 95% of collected survey (n=60).
Conclusions: These sessions have increased the number and diversity of cases trainees at TASH are exposed to, also increasing exposure to US-based teaching case formatting. In addition, the sessions have allowed our faculty to further develop their education portfolio and teaching files with valuable feedback while providing support to our co-sponsored pediatric radiology fellowship abroad.
