Purpose:
Cochlear implantation has transformed the management of pediatric sensorineural hearing loss, and the number of children receiving implants in the United States has continued to increase over the past decade. Many of these children will require subsequent imaging, either for implant complications or unrelated concerns and pediatric imagers must be familiar with the appearance, potential complications, and imaging limitations of these devices. This educational exhibit will review key imaging considerations in postoperative cochlear implant evaluation, MRI safety updates and artifact considerations relevant to pediatric radiologists.
Content Outline / Learning Objectives:
- Brief overview of Cochlear Implant Devices: Understand the components of the device, particularly options for the magnet component, and where the =implant should normally be placed.
- Discuss postoperative imaging findings and complications, including electrode malposition, migration and infection.
- Summarize MRI safety considerations for patients with older and newer cochlear implant (CI) models, highlighting the impact of magnet design and concerns for image quality.
