Identifying Key Educational Needs in Neonatal Imaging: A SPR Neonatal Imaging Committee Initiative

Purpose or Case Report: The Society of Pediatric Radiology (SPR) has recognized the urgent need for improved education in neonatal imaging, especially given rapid advancements and innovation in imaging technology and techniques. This initiative is aimed at pinpointing specific areas within neonatal imaging that require enhanced outreach and training for physicians, ultimately to improve care for neonates.
Methods & Materials: To determine educational needs, the SPR neonatal imaging committee members have conducted an initial discussion to produce a comprehensive list of potential educational topics. Each topic was discussed thoroughly and explored for its current applications, challenges, training methodologies, and clinical implications.
Results: The results highlighted a strong interest in several key areas of neonatal imaging education. Awareness and educational efforts towards point-of-care ultrasound remains uniquely applicable to neonates and received considerable attention. Extreme prematurity imaging techniques and education was identified as high priority due to the progressively earlier viability of neonates. Educating physicians about these techniques may have a notable impact on neonatal care. Pertaining to the topic of extreme prematurity, there was enthusiasm for organizing a mini-symposium focused on the topic, with potential leaders identified for various subtopics, including germinal matrix and brain ultrasound, spinal imaging, and innovative imaging techniques including contrast-enhanced ultrasound.
Conclusions: In conclusion, this collaborative effort by the SPR neonatal imaging committee has created a roadmap for future educational outreach and training initiatives in neonatal imaging. By concentrating on critical areas such as imaging of extreme prematurity and point-of-care ultrasound, the society aims to enhance its members' knowledge and skills, which will ultimately lead to improved outcomes for neonates. Future objectives include organizing educational exhibits, developing specialized physician training programs, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration to further elevate neonatal imaging education and techniques.
