Abdominal pain is common presentation to the pediatric emergency department, and appendicitis remains the most common pediatric surgical emergency. While the imaging workup of pediatric appendicitis typically begins with ultrasound, MRI is increasingly being used for problem-solving and to further evaluate equivocal ultrasound results. With increased utilization, more and more mimics of appendicitis are being encountered on MRI. The purpose of this educational exhibit is to familiarize the practicing pediatric radiologist with these mimics through a case-based review in order to improve diagnostic accuracy and patient care. While hydroceles, patent processus vaginalis, inguinal hernias, varicoceles, epididymitis, orchitis, torsion of testes and appendages are common in pediatric radiological practice, other pathology and anatomical variants are unusual and may not be included in every day practice. We composed a pictorial guide of a wide variety of variants and diseases for education and reference. Read More

While radiographs, and to a lesser extent MRI, remain the mainstay imaging techniques for the evaluation of pediatric musculoskeletal emergencies, ultrasound can be a useful modality for problem solving. The purpose of this educational exhibit is to provide several illustrative cases in which ultrasound was helpful in clinical/diagnostic problem-solving in order to emphasize the importance of ultrasound in these scenarios and to ultimately improve diagnostic accuracy and efficiency.
